Fishing & Cooking LIVE
Greetings Colonists,

Today we are excited to release the Fishing & Cooking major update to Entropia Universe.

Fishing and Cooking brings an entirely new system to the game, and features more depth (pun intended) than any system already existing in the game. Whilst it may be a nice relaxing pastime from hunting - those who want to master it will have their work cut out.

Important Notice

As this release brings entirely new systems into the game, and additionally the scale and depth of said systems, it is possible that various parameters, items and/or blueprints maybe be modified or rebalanced in the immediate weeks following release to ensure the long term balance of the system in relation to the rest of the game and economy.

Finding the right spot

The new fishing system allows you to fish in any body of water across the entirety of Planet Calypso, Next Island, Rocktropia, ARIS and Setesh. Every sea, river, lake and deep ocean is now populated with your next catch.

Which type of water you fish in will determine which fish you can find - some may only be found in one type, while others might be found in multiple.

Putting together your rod

Fishing releases with four types of rod:

Casting Rods -> Casting minigame

Angling Rods -> Angling minigame

Fly Fishing Rods -> Angling minigame (with a different toss-minigame)

Deep Ocean Rods -> Casting minigame (but only from a boat)

But of course, it isn’t just the rod that determines what fish you can catch - you’ll need to assemble the complete equipment:

Understanding the Parameters

You’ll need to attach the Reel, Blank, Line and Lure onto the Rod. Each different attachment involves its own parameters:

Rod Strength

Rod Flexibility

Reel Strength

Reel Speed

Blank Strength

Blank Flexibility

Line Flexibility

Line Strength

Line Length

Lure Depth

Lure Quality

All "Flexibility" stats are added together and affects:

Casting: Affects the distance that the fish swims away while not being reeled in.

Angling: Length of the player’s bar.

All "Strength" stats (except for the Reel's) are added together and affects:

Casting: Reduces tension build-up.

Angling: Increases the time the player has before failure while not overlapping the bars.

Reel Strength is checked towards the Fish's strength and makes the fight easier or more difficult, depending on the result.

Reel Speed affects how fast you reel the fish in during the minigame.

Lure Depth needs to match or exceed minimum fish depth for it to bite.

Lure Quality increases the chance to bite.

Obtaining Spool Cells and Rod Blueprints

You will also need Spool Cells for your fishing, which are crafted from blueprints obtained from the fishing terminal. They can also be obtained by refining Bait Fish and Universal Ammo together. In the short term however, you can speak to Lars for a one-time exchange of universal ammo to spool cells.

You can mix and match every rod and attachment - so you’ll need to find what combinations work for what you want to catch! These will affect your ease and chance of success at reeling in a given fish, and what fish you are likely to attract.

You can acquire the starter blueprints for crafting your own gear from the new Fishing Blueprint Terminal located at Port Atlantis (and also any Technician):

Here is an example of a complete fishing rod crafted from blueprints you can obtain from the terminal:

You can also obtain the Baitfishing Rod from Lars at the camp, which serves as the free to play version of fishing.

You can also obtain a basic set of starting gear from a new mission found on Setesh. More advanced fishing gear blueprints are also ready to be discovered.

Fish, and how to catch them

So now you have your gear, but what can you catch? Fishing releases with 100 different fish for you to discover, and each with their own set of parameters that affects whether or not you can catch them, such as:

Biome preference

Size

Strength

Difficulty

Minimum Depth

Preferred Lure

Time of Day

This means that if you truly wish to master the art of fishing, you’ll need to do plenty of exploring, researching, testing and discovery! Fortune favors the patient and observant.

And of course, you’ll be able to keep a track of what fish you have found and claim skill rewards from the new Fishing Codex:

Getting Started

Once you’ve got your rod assembled, and some Spool Cells in your inventory, you are ready to head out to the waters! As a note, this is just an example of one of the types of fishing you can do.

Simply approach the body of water you want to fish in, and hit E to cast once you see it pop-up. This will enter you into the casting mode, where you can affect how far your line goes out.

Once cast, you’ll now need to wait until you hook a fish, or, press E to cancel. When a fish bites, you’ll see a visual indicator in the water, and also see the UI prompt to hook. Once hooked, you will enter the minigame depending on which type of rod you have equipped. An example of one type is shown here:

If you successfully manage to complete the minigame and reel in the fish - congratulations! You have caught your first fish, but if you fail, the fish is lost forever and you will have to recast.

What's Cooking?

With all these tasty fish, you’ll obviously want to be making some good colonist food with it. Cooking end products will be equivalent to consumable pills - providing colonists with important and new buffs for their adventures. These will replace the existing generic pills found in strongboxes.

Like with fishing, starter recipes can be found from the new fishing terminal to get you started on your gourmet journey. The rest will need to be discovered through cooking!

Unlike in crafting, with cooking you will need to use the right stove for the level of recipe. The Campfire at PA can be used to cook recipes up to level two, but more advanced stoves will need to be discovered, crafted, and can only be used on an estate by the estate owner.

While cooking will primarily consume fishing products, products from systems such as harvesting, gardening, mining and hunting also play a part.

Here’s an example of what goes into a level 1, basic consumable:

In total, 111 new consumable items have been added to the game. For each different possible buff, there will be different strength and duration variants.

For buff strength, there are level 1, 2 and 3 variants.

For each strength variant, there will be a 1hr and 10hr variant.

All in all, there will be new foods for the following buffs:

Crit Chance

Crit Damage

Faster Reload

Run Speed

Max HP

Increased Regeneration

Life Steal

Crit Damage Reduction

Increased Evade/Dodge

Heal over Time

Divine Intervention

Auto Loot

We hope you’ll be hooked…

Well, that’s a brief overview of the Fishing and Cooking system - while we want this to feel like a totally different pace and style of activity compared to our other systems - we’ve gone back to what really matters in Entropia: system depth and reward for players who take the time to learn and discover. Knowledge will really set apart colonists from each other.

So get out there and start fishing! We’ve cooked with this update and now it’s your turn!
